Lenses and UV protection: what you really need to know

Published 12 June 20265 min read

Your eyes are exposed to UV radiation every day, and long exposure can contribute to issues like eye strain and, over time, some cataract conditions. That's why protection isn't a luxury.

What does UV400 mean?

UV400 means the lens blocks radiation up to a wavelength of 400 nanometres — roughly 100% of UVA and UVB rays. This is the standard recommended for full protection.

Useful extra coatings

  • Anti-reflective: reduces glare and improves clarity while driving.
  • Anti-scratch: extends the life of the lens.
  • Polarized: cuts reflected glare off shiny surfaces like asphalt and water.

Practical tip: under the strong Saudi sun, always look for a UV400 label, and prefer polarized lenses for driving and outdoor activities.

Frequently asked

Do all sunglasses protect against UV?+

No. Some cheap sunglasses darken your view without real protection, which can be worse because it widens your pupils. Always check for a UV400 label.

Is a polarized lens the same as UV protection?+

No, they're different. Polarization reduces glare, while UV protection blocks radiation. Ideally a lens offers both.
